How Olivia’s Cottage came to be…

I have been a huge fan of the “old lady” crafts and activities for a very long time. Whether it was crochet, knitting, cross stitch etc., I was always trying to find the more obscure hobbies that people my age didn’t really practice or even really appreciate. That is, until I found a little corner of the internet that opened up a whole new world full of people who enjoyed getting tangled in yarn and poked by sewing needles! Exploring these traditional crafts has brought me immense joy and a sense of connection with a community that shares my love for all things cozy and handmade.

My husband decided to make a major life change in 2019. finally pursuing a lifelong passion that had long been put on the back burner for various reasons. With my relentless encouragement, we made the bold decision to risk it all, which meant a big move to a new town, leaving behind our familiar circle of friends and family. Consequently, my hobbies unwittingly took a backseat during the relocation chaos, with many of my supplies getting tucked away in boxes that seemed to play hide-and-seek with me for the longest time!

We had struggled to conceive a child for 7 long years prior to this move, so my handmade items like booties, blankets, and beanies were cherished gifts for friends expecting, or their children, each stitch carrying a piece of our longing. The joy of crafting for others was interwoven with a subtle sorrow, as our own child remained a dream, always just out of reach. The act of creating became a bittersweet dance, offering both solace and yearning in each delicate thread. In 2020, we got the most incredible news, on the very same day I was supposed to meet with the fertility doctor AGAIN, I got a positive test and from there, we were able to successfully have a healthy baby girl!

Becoming a Mom reignited my passion for crafting, and I eagerly picked up my crochet hooks once more. I started with adorable little toques adorned with playful pom poms and Sorel inspired booties complete with the cutest fur trim. As my confidence grew, I timidly stepped into the world of creating clothing, where my love for crocheting deepened even further. Sweaters, along with booties, hats, wrist warmers, and cozy cowls became my new canvas, each stitch weaving a story of warmth and love for my little one and my friends.

It wasn’t until one morning during one of my daughter's check-ups that a conversation about one of her sweaters turned into an earnest plea from the nurse to turn my hobby into a business. After months of mulling it over, and many conversations – some my husband probably wishes we didn’t have – and countless attempts at different patterns, I started to believe that I just might actually be able to do this. With each stitch, my confidence grew, and Olivia’s Cottage began to take shape. The idea of creating sophisticated and whimsical crochet items for all to enjoy became my driving force. And now, here we are, spreading warmth and joy through each carefully crafted piece.

Reconnecting with the art of handmade creations brought a sense of peace, excitement, and tremendous healing during a time of change and new beginnings. Embracing these timeless crafts not only filled our home with warmth and love but also sparked a creative journey that continues to evolve with each stitch.

I named this venture after my daughter, since she was the one whom without, this would not have been. The love I have for her, the love I never thought I would experience, comes out in the products I make for her, and you. Knowing that if she leaves the house wearing her Magnolia Sweater, she is surrounded by my love, and can know every time she looks down, that I love and cherish her, and am with her wherever she may find herself.

Olivia is the inspiration behind every creation, which allows me to infuse each piece with love not only for her, but for all who might find themselves snuggling a knotted lovey, curling up in a blanket on a cold night, or keeping their ears warm with a headband. I want every stitch to embody the warmth and care of a mother's hands. My goal is to turn each piece into a treasured delight for not only little ones but also for the young at heart, but especially those who might be missing that motherly warmth.

Thank you for stopping by and taking a moment to get to know me and Olivia’s Cottage. I sincerely hope you enjoy these creations as much as my daughter does, and as much as I do making them!

I am forever grateful to each and everyone of you who have made this dream a reality!
